Missing Sheet metal

The PO of my Mk1a cut out the sheet metal that goes in front of the bottom
of the radiator  (for cooling I guess).  I would like to return it to stock
by getting a new piece.  Does this materially affect cooling?  Does this
affect the structure of the car? (It did away with the support bracket for
front valence :-(  )  Is this piece available somewhere without having to
chop up an Alpine?
