I am afraid the days of the "cross member" have long passed, in the technical
sense. When car design consisted of a rolling chassis, with
separate body parts, the serial number (VIN) was stamped on a particular
"chassis" frame member. State law (as well as racing regs) allowed "hot rods"
to be classified by having that particular serial numbered member in the "new"
chassis, as long as you had the original registration for the original vehicle,
and bills of sale for all the new parts.. Many Model "A" and "T" chassis had
that member torched off and welded to a custom box or tubular frame, with
everything else being completely changed, for the best rods of all time.
I suppose, if you could find a "Authentic Serial Number" somewhere on a unibody
design, you could take some advantage of that ruling.
However, the Tiger or Alpine is NOT among them, and there are very strict laws
about changing, removing, altering, defacing, or otherwise
messing with serial (VIN) numbers.
There will be many replies arguing that "their" state doesn't call a equate the
"Serial Number" era with the VIN (Vehicle Identification
Number) era, and that such laws don't apply. I believe them to be mistaken.
Don't spend a dime until you've checked this out with your
state (for street licensing, or even ownership proof in case of doubt). I would
recheck your racing organization with the complete details
of the idea you have, and see if there response still applies.
