A few people have asked about heat insulation for the floor and sound
insulation. i posted some info from the Summit Racing catalogue the other day
and now have it from J.C. Whitney.
The fiber insulated padding with 2 layers of aluminum is 4' x 24' $79.95
4' x 48' $149.95
About the same in 48" x 72" or 4' x 6'
$ 24.95
Two packages of the 48" x 72" is plenty to do the driver and
passenger side of the Tiger. You will end up using some small left over
pieces anyway to fit where things are tight. That will cover the floor,
transmission tunnel and as far up the firewall as you can get, but not way
behind the dash.
I don't think you need this expensive stuff if you are just looking for sound
insulation. There shouldn't be any problem with using the foam padding used
under house carpet. This wholesale/retails for about $1.50 sq/yd for the very
cheapest to about $3.50 sq/yd for the denser stuff. This all just looks like
any basic foam product.
There is, also, a foam composition which can be identified by looking like
thousands of little, multi-colored foam pieces were glued together (which I
guess was done). This is probably about the best for durability under a
carpet, but might be overkill for doors or hardtops.
As I have posted before, the size of the pieces we are talking about using in
doors and such are throw away pieces to carpet installers. If you happen to
see an installation crew on a job, just stop and ask for some small pieces and
they should be glad to just get rid of them. If they're real nasty, Iwould
think that a $5.00 bill would make them very happy.
If you live near a store that sells and installs carpet, just hit their
dumpster at night and pick up all you want for nothing.
