Attached is a email from John Saccameno. He is a VSCDA member but has raced
mostly with NSSCC. He has an 1100 bugeye and I have raced with him and
enjoyed his friendship at some Midwest Council races. He is upset about the
tire ban and has asked me to forward this on the the Thicko list to get some
feedback on our thoughts. I have run the Hoosier Radials the last year or so
and liked them well enough to just have purchased a new set. Thank goodness
they still have the stickers on and I hope I can return.
I am also disappointed to lose IRP. It was not hte smoothest track in the
world but I hate to give it up without a replacement thought. Are we now
done in Sept and have a season one race/month shorter?
Let me know your thoughts

To All:
Thanks to M.L. for the update on board happenings, and Kelvin's reply
regarding these so called "slicky" tires. Now that I have three events on a
new set of Hoosiers, I was a little distressed to find out they are now
"banned".
Since the demise of the R1, many of the Sprite guys have been running either
Hoosiers, Yokos or Khumos, as they are 13 inchers. The Hoosier TD, which was
a favorite bias-ply has been discontinued in some sizes, including 13 inches.
What now? Will the Drivers Committee let us know what the alternatives are,
or are we going to start running street tires?
I get the impression from the notes that members who use these tires need to
be corrected somehow "the explanation included descriptions of members who
use them". The impression being that drivers who use these tires are "unfit
for competition....shouldn't be allowed to play.....people we don't
like......?" People go off in the rain on all tires used if they misjudge a
corner. Oh well. As I stated at the Council Drivers meeting, and still
contend, there is a far greater issue with driver etiquette and behavior than
with the cars and their preparation. The vehicles do not drive themselves.
Putting Ferraris and "funny car" Jaguars, driven to "win" in with a huge
field of small bore cars is far more scary to this "described member".
Banning DOT approved tires which many members have been migrating to over the
past few years makes little sense without some research as to the
alternatives available for all sizes and types. Sounds like the committee
members have found tires they like and use. If that's a problem for others,
too bad. No research? No polling the members? Isn't this an "association"?
I would be curious to get input from my fellow BRG members as to the current
state of Tires. How many of us does, or will, this effect? So far both
Kelvin and I need to consider alternate tires for VSCDA. Would those reading
this please respond to me, or the group, with their current tire choice &
thoughts? I will compile data and publish back to the group. While I may
have a personal and/or financial stake in the outcome, this may be a
non-issue for rmost BRG guys. If you are running R1s today, what tire may
you be planning to go to. Although, remember, as radial tires, R1s also not
considered "legal" You may want to check out tirerack.com for your options.
Sorry for the outburst here, but I'm never happy with decisions which are
made for me when research or recommendations aren't considered for all
involved. My recommedation to Council has been to allow DOT approved tires
within a "reasonable" (to be determined mostly by fender width and era)
aspect ratio and worry more about the lack of skill and courtesy on the track
as these problems pertain to the "driver", not the car
Love to hear all of your thoughts.
