I really have no idea. This is something I was told back in the early 1960s by
a factory trained BMC mechanic of many years experience. I wasn't interested in
reasons at the time, just promoting the longevity of my car.

I was aware of the wear caused by starting your car in gear, and that resting
your foot on the pedal while driving would also shorten the life, and the foot
on the clutch at stop signs and lights. I was not aware of the danger of
resting your hand on the gearshift while in motion. May I request an
explanation for this ignorant young lad?
Thank you so much

Michael,
This all depends on how you drive. Simple explanation...when stopped at a
light or in traffic, do you take the car out of gear and your foot off the
clutch? Or... do you keep the car in gear with the clutch depresses the
entire time? Using the latter technique, your throwout bearing will NOT
last long at all.
I have *always* used the first technique and have never had a throw out
bearing fail prematurely.
Cheers,
Curt
