Air mattress would probably leak as it is made in China.

I should think an old mattress would be great. Hmm, how about an air
mattress from Wall Mart.

Rick,
I use an old piece of carpet. I have a 74 in the garage on it's side
right now ;)
Just gently roll it up onto it's side. I've done this many times
and have never had any damage.
I generally leave the wheel and tire on the front of the side in
contact with the floor (for stability). If the shell has nothing
on it at all, I generally tie a rope to the top of the shell and to a
rafter in the ceiling for safety.
