NO, no, no Billy,
LEDs are the lighting system of the future. Way, way ahead of every other
commercial lighting system. They are virtually instantiations, cheaper to
run than any other lighting method and are versatile with several colours
and brightness levels but they do have a low heat output. Normally rated
for 10,000 hours of use.
They are used for street lights, for lighting tunnels, for spotlights, for
vehicle lighting, replacing strip lights and just about everywhere a light
is needed there is a LED application. Do not think they are Seventies or
too directional, you will find they are the lights for the next generation.
There are problems in getting the electrical supply down to the correct
levels and because of this they do fail. I get a supply of LED bulbs for
playing with from mains voltage GU10s and it is usually the voltage
regulator within the cap that has failed. If the LED has failed it is
usually because it has been fed too high a voltage (Chinese voltage
regulators!).
