The Island of Hawaii still has active volcanoes, and small quakes are
routine. As a result, the wooden buildings are extremely loose in the
joints, and they just sort of rattle around in a quake. They are so loose
that once when I was a kid I stood outside a plantation office building and
pushed rhythmically until I got the whole building rocking back and forth
several inches. No one even came out to see what was happening - no fun.
