>I was curious as to how much expereience the group has had with Judson
> superchargers?
I have had one for a long time. On my unit I have made a new manifold
to accept an S.U. carb. I could never get it to run well with the stock Holley.
>Are they worth the trouble?
Depends on what your looking for. It's kind of a Zen thing.
They are best viewed as a vintage performance item.
Judsons are to be placed 948's only. They will not work on a 1275.
So scratch that idea....
If you want a modern performance item then by all means get the Eaton from Moss.
> Are they a royal PIA?
Yes. To the uninitiated. The main problem is the extra heat they generate,
It is not from friction, but from the fact that the unit compresses air
internally.
They do not like hot summer days. They want a low compression motor
and something to spice up the octane of the gas.
To give you an idea, on a hot summer day the supercharger housing can reach
180F.
> What kind of life can a guy get out of them?
I have not yet seen one reach end of life. Mine still works.
But I don't put a lot of miles on my car. I have no problems driving locally
and short distances with the Judson.
If I drive a long distance (say over 15 miles) I disconnect the belt to the
supercharger
and wire the pulley so it won't spin. When i get to the event I put the belt
back on.
> How difficult are they to rebuild?
They are not too hard to rebuild, but I don't know what your skill level is.
New vanes should be made from this material:
http://vwjudsonregister.tripod.com/torlon-vane-material.htm
The vanes need to be precisely machined and fitted.
I have installed Torlon vanes in my unit and I am evaluating them
without the oiler. The Torlon has self lubricating properties and
the supplier and I believe that the oiler is redundant with Torlon
in this application. The supplier's business card is in the above article.
Steve Quance. Very knowledgable.
In fact you should read through all the items here:
http://vwjudsonregister.tripod.com/archive_page.htm
And go to the forum from here:
http://vwjudsonregister.tripod.com/index.htm
The VW Judson is the same rotor and housing as the Sprite unit btw,
>What should you be asking a seller?
The condition of the bore. The condition of the vane rotor slots.
The condition of the bearings and seals. Was the carb rebuilt?
Any extras, like an original Judson boost/vacuum guage? Or badge?
