No. I guess I've led a pretty sheltered life :)

you've never seen one of these?

A similar mounting plate without the holes, would easily hold lighter, and
two switches, plus room for a couple of more if needed.

Brad,
Thanks for the response. I'm not familiar with the Sun set-up you
mention, but it sounds like it might be something along the lines I'm thinking
of.
Basically, right now I'm contemplating cutting the OE console straight
across, right above the line where it bends from the part that the radio
mounts in, to the upper part where the speaker mounts. Of course, the radio
opening would be covered by an inserted (welded) plate. That would leave
plenty of room for mounting the 4-way flasher switch, cigarette lighter, and
any othe switches I might need to put in there. It would be simple enough to
"section" and reweld the lower part, to make it more narrow, if need be.
Any of you guys ever try something like this?
Thanks.

Why not utilize something similar to the tri pac gauge set Sun used to
offer, to mount the three items you need into it. That way, it is narrower and
not far below the dash, and you gain more knee space.

I've been contemplating ridding my '72 Midget of it's radio console.
I don't
have a radio in the car, and I'm getting increasingly weary of the
console's
intrusion on my knee space. Also, my 6'2" son could use some extra
room in
that area, too. I've been toying wit hthe idea of carving up a
console from a
parts car, to see what solutions I can come up with. Really, all that
I need
from that console is a mounting for the 4-way flasher switch, a
fog/driving
light switch (not currently in use), and the lighter (to power cell
phone
charger, etc.).
Have any of you guys done away with that console? If so, please
describe how
you re-packaged the contents and covered the remains.
Thanks.
