Rick,
Sounds a bit thirsty, to me.......but then you don't say what Crane cam
you are running, or which carburetor(s) you are using. What about spark
advance curve? Your cam profile will work much better with a
distributor that has been modified to provide the optimum advance curve
for the cam & carburetion set up for your modified engine. Having the
right spark advance will make an absolutely STARTLING difference in your
engine's performance, as well as fuel consumption.
In general, we (Brit car owners) tend to neglect our ignition systems,
and be content with sticking a Pertronics system into our worn,
weak-springed distributors, or going to a Mallory (or other) "high
performance" distributor, which is not going to have the correct advance
curve for our engines.
It has been written: "the A series engine doesn't really care how HOT
the spark is, but it DOES care about when that spark occurs".
Last year, in response to my inquiry about rebuilding/restoration
service for our Lucas 25D distributors; some of the guys on this list
recommended Advance Distributors, in Minnesota. I sent a core
distributor to the guy (his name if Jeff Schlemer), and was HIGHLY
pleased with the results. I have since referred others, from our local
MG and Triumph clubs, to Jeff and they too have gotten impressive
results.
