From my limited experience..
Am going to buy my friends 58 that has been stored for 15 years :
1. what structural rust is common?
Rockers, base of A pillar, floor in foot wells
2. are engine/mechanical parts available?
Yup, not too expensive and there are lots of go fast parts, how much
ya wanna spend? ;-)
3. what are the main problem areas to look out for?
Rust, depending on your metal working skills. Everything else
depending on your pocketbook.
4. is there an aftermarket supply for these?
Worldwide, 2 big suppliers in US alone.
5. what parts are especially hard to come by..
Original ones. There are lots of Repro bits, most of the ones on
eBay are repros.
6. are the carbs an issue?
Not really, they take some time to learn but if your fuel system is
clean they run fora very long time.
7. is it 'fun' to drive?
OH YESSSSS!! (Depending upon ambient air temp and proximity to semi's)
8. whats a resonable price for a restorer in decent shape (has title
with extra parts car...
$ 500 t0 $ 3000 depending..
9. do they have any 'value when done?
Yup, exactly $ 1000 less than you have put into them if you do your
own labor, if you pay others then expect to loose closer to $ 7000.
($ 16k for a fully restored one is at the high end)
10. how many were made in 58,59,60
Enough so that you can fine 'em in barns in Ohio!
11. the bugeyes are more desirable than 61 and on? i assume?
Blondes vs Brunettes, Big honkin' hoot... uh.. nevermind.. totally
subjective.
Lester
