For long term after polishing you might consider clear anodizing.
Then you never have to do any maintenance :-)
Two things to keep in mind with this option. First is to wear gloves
when you handle the polished part. It may not be apparent but you
will leave finger prints which will show up in the anodize. You also
have to impress this on the anodizing firm. The finished product
will be a slight satin finish rather than a chrome look. This is
different from original but not that much, at least for me.
