This just in. As I was backing into my driveway, I recalled this
conversation, so I sped up a touch and hit the brakes hard. So ... ABS
kicked in in reverse. ( 2001 Subaru Outback VDC )

Back to ABS - won't work on most cars below a speed around 8 -15mph
(different levels preset by different manufacturers) and to the best of my
knowledge it won't work with the wheels going round backwards. I CANNOT be
100 per cent sure about the latter for all cars but I'll give my technical
guys a call and find out for my own interest. The last time I was playing
out with a modern ABS equipped car and driving backwards (above 25mph) it
didn't work in a Range Rover, a BMW or a Vauxhall.
