That is because we live in the Age of Entitlement. It seems that far too many
people believe that they are entitled to something, especially from the
Government. That is exactly the reason the Federal budget is out of whack and
will NEVER be in balance. At this point, two-thirds of the Federal budget
consist of entitlements that are fixed in the budget year after year, and
which would literally take an act of Congress to eliminate. And what are these
entitlements?
. --Federal employee retirement benefits
. --Special education to the school for developmentally handicapped
. --Federal aid to economically disadvantaged schools
. --Migrant education
. --Other education issues
. --Interest on the deficit in Federal spending
. --Federal employees and retirees health benefits
. --Certain veterans benefits
. --Certain unemployment benefits
. --Certain social services
. --Certain community developments
. --Medicaid health benefits for those who cannot afford it
. --Medicare
. --Social Security
Of course the budget could be balanced by eliminating ALL discretionary
spending for defense, homeland security, justice, veterans benefits, highways,
unemployment bene-fits, the environment, social services, community
development, energy, international aid, science research, and farm subsidies.
The big problem is that people now feel entitled to some aspect of Federal
money, and want to be taken care of by Government. And woe betide anyone who
tries to take it from them! It is so much easier for gutless politicians NOT to
make hard decisions!
