Dave, IIRC, the 1489 and 1588 both used the exact same head, as you pointed 
out for the 1489 -- the 15 head.  It was the 1622 that used the new, 
improved 16 head with the bigger valves.  I think (hope) I'm right on that.

I think the Metropolitan came with the 1500 (1489) motor, so I don't know 
what the difference in the head might be -- unless it is a bit de-tuned for 
the Metro over the MGA?  Another Barney question.

Larry is correct (of course) and FWIW, at the rear of the valve cover on
the head a raised, cast-in number denoting displacement should be
evident.  15 for 1489, 16 for 1588, I'm not sure what the 1622 head has;
Barney??  If it has an18 then someone put on an MGB head.  The head that
came with mine had nothing on it which I was told meant that it was for
a Nash Metropolitan.  That was never verified.  By all means go to
Barney's web site.
