If you jack up the one side of the car a little, the diff fluid will not 
leak out. Only a drop or 2 from the axle.
It is a lot easier to work on them on the bench.
Did you try a torch on the adjuster? Most of the time, that works.
The 5/16 square adjuster wrench is a big help too.
But I have had a pair of backplates where no amount of heat or 
penetrating oil would help.
Once you get it loose, neversieze it up. BTW it does not come out from 
the back, to remove the adjuster you have to screw it through the back 
plate into front (brake shoe side)
