Hi Robert,
Right, the double pulley is for the later 1275 smog pump cars, and the fan
takes up a lot more space than the metal one.
My suggestion is to pull the engine and trans and check out all the trans
mount rubber and the engine mounts. If they are soft, replace them.
Simple. Then repace the double pulley with a single steel one and use a
metal fan.
Fans can be close to the radiator if there are some design factors that
work. On my Datsun powered Morris Minor, my fan is so close to the radiator
I need to pull the radiator to change the fan/alternator belt. This has
been the case for maybe 300k mile or more. Despite panic stops, airborn
bumps and anything else a daily driver will encounter, it has NEVER touched
the radiator. Not so when I had a 1275 powered Morris and the Brit mounts
in place, same car. Damn dog!!
