WST and I were trying to remove the pilot bushing from the rear of my 1275
crank. A while back someone had suggeted filling the back with grease, finding
a bolt or something close to the bushing ID, and pounding the bolt in to force
the bushing out with grease pressure. After measuring and trying every bolt,
socket and anything else round in Flounder's shop, and having nothing work,
we were stopped cold. One half inch was too loose, 9/16" wouldn't fit into the
bushing. And we didn't have a chisel that would fit either. Then I noticed a
gear puller. I measured the OD of the gear puller bolt - it was around 0.530",
with fine threads. I screwed that into the bronze pilot bushing and pulled it
right out. No damage to the puller bolt or crankshaft. Of course, the bushing
was boogered up, but we were going to replace that anyway.
