Dan,

To me, this smacks of a bad connection somewhere in the starter
circuit or battery to earth. Check the ground strap between the engine
and chassis. On my midget its on one of the clutch slave cylinder
bolts. If your ground got loose, it would explain the sporadic nature
of the thing.
