Additionally, in those times the "number of the beast" would have been
written in Roman Numerals (DCLXVI) which just happen to have been associated
with one of the Caesars.  (See Robert Graves "The White Goddess")  Here we
had a group that was being persecuted by the Romans, it makes a lot of sense
for them to have hidden their secrets in a code.
