I did a compression test and a leak down test on the Bugeye today.
Compression was good, 195 to 210. Checked it with two different gauges and
was within 2 pounds of each gauge. When fresh, the compression was 220 on
all four cylinders. Engine has about 10,000 miles of moderate to hard
driving.
Leak down test was another matter. Cylinder #1 showed 10% leakage. Cylinder
#2 showed 60%, #3 showed 40% and #4 showed 60%. The air was coming out of
the crankcase. Intake, exhaust, radiator and next door valves were all
quite. Looks like the rings?
The engine only emits a small puff of smoke on up and down shifts. Oil is
however coming out the exhaust pipe at a rate of about a quart every 350 -
400 miles. It also blows a small amount out the vented oil filler cap.
Why is the compression still so good?
