Bill,
On my racing Bugeye, I run NGK BP8ES plugs, Aldon modified Lucas 25 D4
distributor (original Lucas part # 40984) with Pertronix ignitor (first
generation), 7 mm solid core silicone insulated spark plug wire (Accel),
and OEM Lucas side entry cap Lucas (part # DLB101 - screw-in type). Plugs
would obviously be too cold for a street engine, and what you are using (NGK
BP5ES) should be fine for a standard street Spridget.
Check here if you need more info on spark plugs:

Have you considered it might be a fuel problem? I had a problem with poor
starting and intermittent misfires with my Lotus 7 Twin Cam, and I was sure
it was an electrical problem - turned out to be dirty fuel. Particles of
dirt in the two Webber wire mesh fuel filters gave those symptoms. I assume
dirt in an inline fuel filter could give the same symptoms.
JLC
PS: Lucas # DLB101 = Bosch # 45802 B (alternative side-entry distributor
cap)
For those who use points in a 25 D4: Lucas # TK 50 = Delco # E 527
= Borg and Beck #A 527
Rotor For Lucas 25 D4 distributor: Delco # E 407 (I do not have the
Lucas part # for this)
