Wrong, the alternator contains a regulator and they can go bad. At the
extreme end when they've gone bad to non-existant the battery is massively
over-charged and smells of bad eggs. The engine starts up sounding like an
aero
engine and then slows down to an idle.
Check the voltage reading across the battery on different RPMs to see if the
regulator in the alternator is working OK?
