You will get all kinds of opinions on this question, primarily along the
lines of what one company charges as opposed to another, how someone
saved $10.00 by switching to this company or that, or something like:
"I've had great service from Brand X, but no claims yet." Most responses
are not going to be from people with real claim experiences.
First recommendation: Purchase it through your current insurance agent
so this coverage can be coordinated with your other auto insurance and
umbrella liability coverage.
Second recommendation: Purchase the same liability and uninsured
motorists limits as your primary policy.
Third recommendation: On the application, answer all questions truthfully.
Fourth recommendation: Read the use conditions and limitations on the
application and take them literally.
Fifth recommendation: Verify in writing that the physical damage
coverage is "Agreed Value" coverage and NOT "Stated Amount".
The fourth recommendation is one that you will receive incorrect advice
and various anecdotal examples of how to get around the use limitations.
All I can tell you is this. All of the companies invoke those
limitations. None, in my experience, allow you to use the vehicles for
daily transportation, even on an occasional basis. Like any insurance
claim event, a company might look the other way for a relatively small
property-damage-only claim/comprehensive or collision claim, but should
you have a real bodily injury liability claim, expect rough seas if the
date and time of loss is something like Tuesday morning at 9:00am or in
a Wal-Mart parking lot. As is true in any business or trade, the claim
departments in the insurance companies have heard all of the stories,
most much more creative than "I was on my way to my mechanic".
If you plan on using your Spridget for daily driving, add it to your
primary auto policy and add "Agreed Value" physical damage coverage.
