Let me say that I have de-rusted a few brake pedal boxes in the past.
Left them in the washing soda solution for a few days.
The rust was gone, the brass/bronze bushings came out fine.
The electrode in the solution is the sacraficial metal.
Of course your spackle bucket might be different ;)
