do not confuse thermostat opening temp
with operating temp. The accurate stat sets
a minimum operating temp only.
The thermo numbers you are using correspond to a "summer" stat. There are
two others which allow for warmer opening
points. For those who wish good heat in winter we have the warmer 180F stat and
for emissions engines we have the hotter
running 190F stat.
Generally speaking, in street applications,
the "normal" engine without a stat (but
using a "blanking sleeve") will "normally"
seek between 170-180 in 70F ambient
temp conditions on the open road. This
assumes reasonably decent mechanical
condition in ALL respects.
Some will run a little cooler, some a little
warmer.
