Aaaarrrggghhh! My own dumb fault! When I was "playing around" under there I must have knocked the link for the air pump down where it drags on the back of the crank pulley. (Next time I'll remove the link along with the pump after inspection.) Problem seems gone. Thanks for the suggestions; I tried them all.
