An easier way to judge the alt bearings is to take a looong wooden handled
screwdriver and hold the tip on the alt housing while the engine is running.
Put your ear close to the wood handle and listen for a growling noise. The
resonance will let you know if the bearing is headed south. You can do this on
an alt that you know is good as a reference if you need to know what a good one
sounds like...

waterpump fan, that will tell you if the bushing in the pump is shot.
