my car makes a noise which I believe to be light, intermittent contact
between the starter and flywheel gear. It's not grinding, more like clinks.
When
I installed the starter the clearance looked tight. I took out a spacer, made
sure the surfaces were clean, and made it tight. I could remove it and mill
down the fat (1/2 in) spacer but it seems there must be something else at
work. Any thoughts? I don't think the flywheel is out of round b/c it was
recently lightened/balanced/trued. I was careful to install and torque it
properly
and besides, the contact is not regular, as if it were happening at only one
point on the flywheel.
