Welcome to another reason why modern cars use alternators rather than DC
generators!
It is perfectly normal for a generator not to be charging at idle (hence the
red light). General tule of thumb used to be that under 2000rpm operation of
the vehicle did not do much for the battery's state of charge. Alternators
operate efficiently over a much wider range of rpm. Hence the use of
ammeters to accurately monitor the current (pun intended) state of charge.
