The gas tank needs to be vented in some fashion. In stock trim, the venting
was accomplished by way of the charcoal cannister and helped return fumes to
the fuel tank rather than venting them to atmosphere. The hoses in the boot
tend to perish rather readily, even though it might be hard to notice this
through the braided covers. It is not difficult to take a Dremel and dissect
the hose fittings so that they can be effectively plugged. If you were to do
this, it would be a good idea to take a small drill bit ( I used 1/8") and
make a couple of holes through the seal on the gas cap so that air can enter
to replace the volume of fuel as it is consumed by the engine.
YMMV
