The change was August 1977 for the 1978 model year, GAN6-200001 on.
That said, I have a 3.7 in my midget and it still screams on the
highway, about 3500 rpm @ 60mph. If you can save up the money (about
$2000, give or take, someone correct me on this), a Ford 5-speed
conversion will really help.

Norm...
You do not state which year 1500.
The early ones came with a 3.9, the later
ones with a 3.7. I think the change year
was '77 but am not positive about this.
Hopefully, a "knowing" lister will chime in
and let us both know! :)
Anyway, Victoria British carries the different ring and pinion ratios
for these
diffs., the "longest" one offered being
3.55 which is what you are looking for,
for less revs per mph in "cruise mode"! :)
