Well, Mike...

You may be right.

Depends on where you are and what
the going rate is for this kinda work in
your area, how honest the shop is, where
the parts are sourced, etc. Lot of variables, here.

For good work I can go to Kent Bain's
Automotive Restorations in Stratford, CT.

Does Ferrari's, Bugatti's, Jags...MG's and
Sprites!! It'll be good work but you can bet
it'll cost me a hell of a lot more than my
buddy here in Stamford who does good
work at a "reasonable" price, parts not
included.

I mean your 6k job became 100%+ that
price...and time as well. And, this is not
unusual, most especially with guys who are new to a car or who may never
have
done their own work before and are just
not familiar with what is "involved". Most especially "checkbook" guys
who have
never done their own work.

Then again, maybe the shop took advantage of this guy, did good work but
overcharged him 'cause he "didn't know".
Wouldn't be the first time this sorta thing
might occur....ask any girl.

I myself got taken (slightly) by a local
"new guy" here in town on a paint job.
But he knows I know..... and he knows
I've made quite sure that everybody else
knows as well!!!

The other guy's car he painted (AH 3000)
at the same time he painted mine was a
little more miffed....he sued the hell out of
him....and won!! But, we're talking almost
15k here. Mine was only 3.5k as it needed
little in the way of bodywork. Guy still did
a crap prep job, though. Really amatuerish. Hell, I do better easily!
:):)
