I let all the smoke out of the harness on PIECES tonight.
I re-connected the battery to test my wiring at the lights and signals,
all was going fine. But the dash was not bolted in place just yet.
All of a sudden, SMOKE! Lots of it. And of course I couldn't find the
1/2" wrench to disconnect the battery so I start dyking the thick brown
wires.
Oh well, smoked the main battery line from solenoid to ign switch back
to fuse box and starter button. And I made a mess out of most of the
other wires that were all wrapped up from the dash to the fuse box.
I managed to save most of the dash harness and just replaced a few
melted wires along with the bare one that was the main battery line.
Everything works again except the brake lights but I'll figure that out
tomorrow.
I still don't know exactly what happened. The battery was connected for
an hour before the smoke got out. I was at the work bench, nobody else
in the garage and POOF! up in smoke.
Moral of the story.....Keep that battery disconnected if the dash is
hanging loose.
