Bonnet Hinge Gasket

In cleaning up the hood (ok, bonnet) which is off the car due to engine 
work, I found "gasket" material stuck to the hood where the hinges mate.

It felt like tar paper -- but perhaps that's because of all the oil it's 
picked up over the years.

Is this important?  What should I use?
