O.K., the strong side goes AWAY from the spacer. It makes sense if you think
about it: the strong side keeps the bearings from coming apart in that
direction, and the spacer keeps them from coming apart in the other direction.
The purpose of the spacer is to preload the bearing inner race slightly to
take up any inherent play in the ball bearings, with the help of the shims.

These bearings are not marked.
By "strong" I meant the side of the bearing that the inner race will not
come out of, at least not as easy as it could come out the other side.
On the side that I call the strong side there is a lip on the outer race.
If
you look at the bearing from both sides, that side of the outer race
appears
thicker than the other side.
