Wrapping the headers might help, I have heard it shortens header life.
A quick and cheap heat sheild would be an old asbestos siding shingle
bolted or glued to the underside of the metal heat sheild.
Wear a mask when you drill it, or use some sort of high temp glue/caulk
Solar seal (caulk) holds good under heat as does some furnace sealants.
Home Defect sells an asbestos *style* shingle, and they sell them each
or by the pack. It's a cement based shingle, no asbestos in it. This
should work resonably well, not as good as stealing a real asbestos
shingle off the guys house up the street but it will be close.
