Painting Rostyles

Anyone have any experience with Painters Tape? There are 2 types of this
masking tape that can supposedly left on the object being painted - one type
for 5 days, the other for 30 days. After painting the black quadrants on one
of the wheels I did not remove the 'regular' masking tape within a couple of
hours. It bonded with the painted surface and pulled off chunks of silver
paint. Is there an easier way to mask the wheel?
