It's not bull. Why work for $10 an hour when you can make more than that in
unemployment? If Indiana and Texas are paying more than that in
unemployment compensation then shame on them. They are encouraging people
to go on the dole.
In Michigan the maximum unemployment benefit is $9.05 per hour ($362 per
week), and you have to have been making $17 an hour or more in your last job
to qualify to get it. Unemployment compensation is paid here on a sliding
scale based on the wages you earned in the last 18 months. Example - a guy
making $10 an hour that lost his job would get $213 (plus $6 for each
dependent) per week. This is considerably less than he was making at his
job and encourages him to keep his job. I couldn't live on the unemployment
compensation available here so I work hard at keeping my job.
Maybe the states of Indiana and Texas need to rethink their position on
unemployment compensation.
