Oil filter conversion

Can anyone tell me if the oil filter conversion kit for modern screw-on filters 
is worth doing? I just about lost an engine last night due to my sloppy 
installation of the old drop in filter...I notice that Brit Vic says something 
to the effect of "you must have an oil cooler installed" - what does that mean?
