They tried to get me and Miss Marple today.
First, on the way to work this morning, a huge Toyota Echo changed lanes
quickly, with no signal. The corner of her rear bumper was coming for my
'A' post. I got to test the brakes ( after twitching to the right ). They
seemed to lock up just fine. But the car did seem to go a bit to the left.
Not a perfect straight line. She couldn't have missed me by more than 6
inches.
Earlier this evening, I went to pick up pizza and as I pulled into the
parking lot, at that magic moment when you'd really downshift into first if
you had synchro, a parked car started backing out at me. It was a slow-mo
at that speed as I steered hard away and had almost no power to get away.
At first I thought the left rear fender was going to get hit, then I feared
for my taillight as he seemed to chase me. Almost the only thing I remember
of that car is that big backup light.
Funnily enough, I felt more empowered to control my destiny with a Toyota
coming at me sideways while doing 50mph than I did at less than 10mph in the
parking lot.
