Geoff,
Sometimes the old bakelite or replacement plastic will dry out and shink.
As
long as the spring loaded pin will retract into the barrel of the switch, the
knob
will come off. It may require a little effort and you may destroy the knob in
the
process. It's O.K., the replacement knobs these days look great and fit
perfectly. Most of the time anyway. I replaced mine and remember the old knob
was tough to get off also. I took the old switch apart, cleaned it and am still
using the original 43 year old switch and key barrel. The contacts are worn,
but
serviceable. The old switches has a retaining "C" ring on the shaft in the rear
so it could be disassembled and cleaned. The newer ones are permanently sealed.
