"Usually lodges someplace in the engine" Yep... Had a mechanic once who was fond of using silicone as a gasket for the often troublesome thermostadt area. The silicone worked just fine as a "gasket" but unfortunately, a great deal of it ended up "in" the cooling system where I am sure it "coated" everything with a nice thin "film" of the stuff which must have done wonders for "heat transfer"! :( Cap'n.
