I'll have to thank whoever it was that sent the link to Tony Blair's speech to
the House of Commons. It does a great job in laying out the case for war and
why it was, indeed, a last resort. Those questioning the motives of the U.S.
Government and its members often ignore the fact that independent countries
such as Britain, Spain and others, have come to the same conclusions with the
same facts. Those countries virulently opposing the war in this case seem to
be the ones with the ulterior motives. It seems Russia has been selling war
material to Iraq in violation of UN sanctions, for example. Perhaps they were
afraid of being found out if the war went forward? Now we hear that France is
campaigning heavily for a cut of the business of rebuilding. So they want to
participate in the "spoils" without sharing the cost? Seems to be an inherent
lack of principle somewhere in there.

It is very easy to be anti-war. All it takes is coming up with simplistic
slogans ("No Blood for Oil") and walking down the street or wearing a pin. War
is an easy thing to argue against and a hard thing to argue for. War is, and
should be, inherently repulsive to any and all decent people. The more
difficult work is to understand when war is necessary and to enter it knowing
that people will die. Unless you believe that everyone in our government is
inherently evil and without conscience (which I know some do believe), it is
impossible to believe that war is no less repulsive to them and no less
difficult to start. What a horrible responsibility to bear. No thank you.
