Frank and All,
Just don't try those "FLUX WIRE" MIG welders. They are little better than
crude ARC welders for anything besides garden tools. You need a machine that
has the gas bottle and allows use of pure wire.
I have the Miller 250x with gas for mild and stainless. This type welder is
the best I've used for all thickness metal and for quick production with
little setup time. You get to weld as long as you can hold it without rod
changes. (continuious bead). Trouble is, you have to have an expensive spool
gun for aluminum or you have to have a seperate gun and hose with tefelon
liner and that requires changing the wire spool and the whole setup. Thats
why I have the water cooled TIG which is better for thin aluminum anyway.
BTW, gas welding of aluminum has been done for years..... SUPER CLEAN
de-oxyidation of all surfaces is required with ANY aluminum welding. The
thin stuff is critical on heat. All of it is critical on skill.
