Hi listers:
I need some help with a diagnosis. I have a 1275 in my bugeye which has been
out of service since last October after hitting a deer. After a lengthy stay
at the body shop I brought it home on a trailer only to have it running so
poorly it would not pull itself up my driveway. However the water pump had
developed a bad leak while at the body shop and was throwing water onto the
ignition system, so I assumed that was the problem. I put it up on jack
stands and proceeded to pull the engine to change to the 5 speed rivergate
tranny and converted to a header(LCB from APT) but used the rest of my
previously aquired stainless exhaust system. Of course I replaced the water
pump while I was at it. One possible important point is that the body shop
savagely hacked the exhaust apart just ahead of the muffler for some reason.
I mean it looked like they had used vice grips and ripped the pipe apart
rather than cutting it. When I got it back they had welded the pipe back
together, but it's hard to say what the inside of the pipe looks like.
Anyway, now I can get it to start and idle OK, and will even rev up well
once it is warmed up completely, but if you hold the throttle open it starts
coughing and losing power and RPMs. I've checked timing - dead on at 10
BTDC. I have the Pertronix electonic ignition set up. I have readjusted
carbs and used color-tune. I replaced the plugs and the wires are fairly
new. I can't find a setting where it will run right when throttle is held
part way open. I'm wondering if the weld job might be restricting the
exhaust to where there is too much back pressure, but I'm looking for other
ideas on what's going on. The car ran great before the deer incident.
Thanks in advance
John O'Brien
