Jack,
Sounds like a snapped axle. If you are lucky, it has not jammed in there
preventing normal dissasembly. You should try to remove each axle first...
hopefully, one will come out normal, the other broken. Then you can remove
the drive line at the rear U joint and take the pumpkin out. Inspect all.
Doubt that an MGB diff will work or be much better if it does.
Then, hardened axles are in order. Or, you can do a conversion to a RX7 diff
that has hardened axles, LSD, is beefy, and has rear disk brakes and good
berrings and seals. Each of those options are between $500 and $1000.. the
hardened axles don't get you all the rest of the features of the RX7 diff.
