I thought I had a similiar problem with the Bendix on my TR4A. Took the
starter out and did find a broken return spring, which was replaced. But what
interested me was that the factory manual said to replace the Bendix "dry"
without any lubrication.
Figured they couldn't know as much as me, and put the thing back with a
light coating of lithium grease.
Are the factory guys worried that grease on the Bendix is going to pick up
dirt?
