Last week my 77 Midget stopped running at highway speeds. I coasted
to the side and found that the car had no spark. I did not have a
multi-meter (not sure if that would have helped) so I got towed home.
Last night I was poking around with a multi-meter and this is what I
found:
1. If the points are OPENED there still is a path to ground on
the positive side of the coil. I would think there should only
be a path to ground if the points are closed.
2. I disconnected the white-black wire from the coil that that
still had a path to ground (as verified by my ohm meter).
Am I looking at a short to ground somewhere between the coil and the
tach or somewhere further down the line? Or is my line of reasoning
incorrect?
The coil has ~8 volts when the car is on (the system has a ballast
resistor). Any ideas on what I should be seeing?

PS. Haynes shows that the early 77 cars do not have a ballast
resistor, but car does and it was built in Feb of 77. Go figure.
